The Machame path was rated the most beautiful climbing route in the world! This is owing to the breathtaking vistas of Mount Meru, the dramatic ascent along the Barranco wall, and the other attractions. The route also features well-kept hiking trails. You can also see more of Kilimanjaro because the Machame trail takes a different path to the summit than the descent.

The Machame route ascent takes six days, although it is also possible to complete it in seven days to allow your body to thoroughly acclimatize. We propose this extra day because it improves your chances of reaching the peak. In this case, you would hike an extra day from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp, with day five of this route corresponding to days five and six of the Lemosho route.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our Summerwinter Adventures guide will be there to welcome you. You will be transferred to your hotel, where you can relax and recover after your journey.

Preparation for the Climb
Before the climb, you’ll meet your guide for a briefing on what to wear, what to pack, and important advice to ensure your climb is as comfortable as possible.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800m / 5,905ft), where you’ll trek through lush rainforests that give way to the moorlands. Your destination for the day is Machame Camp (3,000m / 9,840ft). Enjoy stunning views as you immerse yourself in the beauty of Tanzania’s nature.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

From Machame Camp (3,000m), you’ll trek to Shira Camp (3,840m), with incredible views of Kibo and Shira as you ascend. This day will challenge you, but the scenery will inspire you to keep going.
Elevation: 3,000m (9,875ft) – 3,840m (12,600ft)

Day 4: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

On Day 3, you’ll trek from Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m), an iconic feature of the Machame Route. This day requires you to pace yourself due to the higher altitude. After reaching Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), located at the base of the Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

On Day 4, hike from Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m). This stretch is physically demanding, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views as you approach the summit. Make sure to get plenty of rest, as your final ascent to the peak will begin at midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Gate

The big day has arrived! Depart Barafu Camp around midnight and begin your trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). At the summit, you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise, an unforgettable experience. After celebrating your achievement at the peak, descend to Millennium Camp (3,820m) to rest. The following day, descend further to Mweka Gate (1,650m), where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Then, transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower and celebration.
