Starting point: Arusha, Tanzania
Safari style: Private safari or small group, subject to availability
Detailed day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast in Arusha, meet your safari guide for a short briefing before travelling to Tarangire National Park. The drive takes around 2.5–3 hours in normal road conditions, depending on your starting point and traffic.
Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and wildlife that gathers around the Tarangire River, especially during the dry season.
Once you enter the park, begin your first game drive. Your guide will take you along suitable wildlife-viewing tracks, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas and warthogs. Lions may also be seen resting in the shade or moving through the grassland.
Stop at a designated picnic site for lunch before continuing your afternoon game drive. Take time to enjoy the scenery and photograph the baobab trees and animals along the river.
Later in the afternoon, leave the park and drive to your lodge or tented camp. Enjoy dinner and relax after your first day in the African bush.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in the Tarangire area or Karatu.
Day 2: Karatu to Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner | Overnight: Serengeti
After breakfast, depart for Serengeti National Park via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes you through changing landscapes, from the green highlands to the wide-open plains of the Serengeti.
Along the way, you may see Maasai homesteads and livestock grazing in the surrounding countryside. Your guide will explain the local environment and how wildlife and communities share this part of Tanzania.
Continue into the Serengeti, one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations, known for its extensive grasslands, large predator populations and the annual wildebeest migration.
After entering the park, enjoy a game drive as you make your way towards your accommodation. Depending on the location of wildlife, you may encounter zebras, wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, gazelles and groups of buffalo. Keep an eye out for lions resting in the grass or leopards hidden in trees.
Stop for a picnic lunch at an approved site or enjoy lunch according to your camp’s arrangements. Continue your afternoon game drive before heading to camp.
In the evening, settle into your accommodation, have dinner and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Serengeti.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in Serengeti National Park.
Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner | Overnight: Serengeti
Wake up early for breakfast and prepare for a full day exploring the Serengeti. An early start gives you a good opportunity to see animals when temperatures are cooler and wildlife is often more active.
Spend the morning searching for lions, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs, zebras and wildebeest. Your guide will follow suitable tracks and use knowledge of animal movements to find promising viewing areas.
The Serengeti is also famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration. The location of the herds changes throughout the year, so sightings depend on the season, recent rainfall and grazing conditions. During June and July, herds may be moving through the western corridor or towards the northern Serengeti, but their exact location cannot be guaranteed.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in a designated area, then continue with an afternoon game drive across the plains. There will be opportunities to stop for photographs and observe the animals without rushing from one sighting to another.
In the late afternoon, return to your lodge or tented camp. Enjoy dinner and share the day’s wildlife experiences before resting for the next part of your safari.
Optional activity: A hot-air balloon safari may be available at an additional cost, depending on the camp location, weather and advance booking.
Overnight: Lodge or tented camp in Serengeti National Park.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Enjoy breakfast before setting off on a morning game drive in the Serengeti. This is another chance to look for wildlife you may not have seen during the previous day, perhaps a leopard resting in a tree, a cheetah scanning the plains or elephants moving between feeding areas.
After the game drive, begin the journey towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on your route, wildlife sightings and road conditions, you will travel through parts of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro highlands.
You may stop at a designated picnic site for lunch during the journey. The landscape gradually changes as you approach the highlands, with open grasslands giving way to greener slopes and cooler air.
If time and your travel arrangements allow, your guide can explain the geology of the Ngorongoro volcanic landscape and the conservation area’s importance to wildlife. The crater is a large volcanic caldera with a remarkable concentration of animals living within its walls.
Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, check in and relax. Dinner will be served at the lodge, giving you time to prepare for the following day’s crater safari.
Overnight: Lodge in Karatu or accommodation near the Ngorongoro Crater rim.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha
Wake up early, enjoy breakfast and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater entrance for your final wildlife experience. Descend into the crater in your safari vehicle and spend the morning exploring its grasslands, wetlands, woodland and shallow lakes.
The crater floor is home to a wide variety of wildlife. During the game drive, you may see zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, hyenas and lions. With some luck, you may also spot the endangered black rhino.
Your guide will help you look for wildlife while explaining the animals’ behavior and the different habitats found inside the crater. The scenery is another highlight, with the crater walls rising around the open grasslands.
Around midday, stop at a designated picnic area for lunch before continuing with a final short game drive, depending on the day’s schedule and park regulations.
In the afternoon, ascend from the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha. Your arrival time will depend on road conditions, the length of the crater visit and any stops along the way.
You will be dropped off at your hotel or another agreed location in Arusha. If you have a flight or an AFCON match to attend that evening, allow enough time for the transfer and check-in. For an important match or international flight, arranging an overnight stay is the safer option.
This brings your five-day Tanzania wildlife safari to an end.
