6 Days Successful Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route (2027–2029)
The best 6 Days Successful Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route (2027–2029) is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The trek takes you through beautiful rainforest, open moorland, rocky alpine landscapes and the icy summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.
Often called the Whiskey Route, Machame is popular with climbers looking for a challenging adventure with spectacular views. The trail offers excellent scenery and an important acclimatisation opportunity at Lava Tower, where climbers ascend to a higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp.
This itinerary is designed for travellers planning their Kilimanjaro climb in 2027, 2028 or 2029. It includes six days on the mountain, with the final descent through the Mweka Route.
Please note: The six-day Machame Route is physically demanding, particularly on Day 4 and summit day. Although reaching the summit is the goal, no itinerary can guarantee success. Climbers with additional time should consider the seven-day Machame Route, which provides an extra night for acclimatisation.

The best 6 Days Successful Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route (2027–2029) Detailed 6-day Machame Route itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
1,800 m to 3,010 m · 11 km · 5–7 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
The climb begins with a morning transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration and a briefing from your mountain guide, you enter Kilimanjaro National Park and begin the walk through the rainforest.
The trail climbs steadily beneath tall trees, thick vegetation and hanging moss. The forest is often humid, and the path can become muddy or slippery, especially after rain. Keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and forest birds.
You will stop for lunch along the trail before continuing towards Machame Camp. On arrival, your crew will have prepared the tents and a warm meal. Spend the evening resting, drinking water and preparing for the following day’s climb.
Overnight: Machame Camp.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
3,010 m to 3,840 m · 5 km · 4–6 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and follow a steeper trail towards the Shira Plateau. The vegetation gradually changes from dense forest to open heath, giant heathers and scattered volcanic rocks.
As you gain height, the views open across the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you may catch impressive views of Kibo, the main volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro.
The walk is shorter than the previous day, but the increase in altitude makes a slow pace important. Your guide will allow regular breaks and check how everyone is feeling.
Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, where you can enjoy the mountain scenery before dinner. The colder evening is a good opportunity to organise your warm clothing and sleeping equipment.
Overnight: Shira Camp.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
3,840 m to 4,630 m, then down to 3,960 m · 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
This is one of the most important days of the climb. After breakfast, the trail crosses the Shira Plateau and continues towards Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation at approximately 4,630 metres.
The steady ascent provides an opportunity for your body to begin adapting to the thinner air. You will stop for lunch near Lava Tower, where your guide can assess how you are responding to the altitude.
After lunch, descend towards Barranco Camp. Although you finish the day at a lower elevation than the highest point reached, this climb-high, sleep-low approach is an important part of acclimatisation.
The descent takes you into the beautiful Barranco Valley, surrounded by steep mountain slopes and dramatic rock formations. Giant groundsels and other high-altitude plants add character to the landscape.
On arrival, settle into camp, enjoy dinner and rest well. The impressive Barranco Wall rises above the camp and marks the first challenge of the following morning.
Overnight: Barranco Camp.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
3,960 m to 4,673 m · Approximately 9–12 km · 8–10 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Day 4 is the most demanding part of the six-day ascent before summit day. The early start is important because this itinerary combines the Barranco-to-Karanga section with the climb to Barafu Camp.
After breakfast, begin climbing the famous Barranco Wall. The path is steep in places, and you may need to use your hands for balance. It is a non-technical scramble, but care is needed, particularly when the trail is busy.
From the top of the wall, enjoy wide views of the mountain before descending and crossing the valleys towards Karanga. Take a break and have lunch before continuing the climb to Barafu Camp.
Unlike the seven-day itinerary, the six-day version does not include an overnight stay at Karanga Camp. This makes the day longer and leaves less time for recovery before the summit attempt.
Reach Barafu Camp in the afternoon. Your crew will provide an early dinner, after which your guide will explain the summit plan and check your equipment. Prepare your headlamp, gloves, insulated jacket, water and snacks before getting into your sleeping bag.
Try to rest as much as possible. The summit climb normally begins around midnight, depending on the guide’s assessment and weather conditions.
Overnight: Barafu Camp.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
4,673 m to 5,895 m, then down to approximately 3,068 m · 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone and alpine desert
Summit day begins shortly after midnight. After a light snack and a hot drink, set off with your guide under the light of your headlamp.
The trail climbs gradually across steep volcanic scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. The cold, darkness and altitude make this a physically demanding section. Walk slowly, take short breaks when needed and follow your guide’s instructions.
Reaching Stella Point is a major achievement. If the weather allows, you may witness the sunrise over the African landscape. From here, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
At the summit, take photographs, celebrate your achievement and enjoy the moment. The time available at the top depends on the weather, your condition and the guide’s safety assessment.
After the summit, begin the long descent to Barafu Camp, where you can rest and have refreshments. Continue down the Mweka trail to Mweka Camp.
The descent is tiring, particularly after the overnight climb, so use trekking poles and watch your footing on loose gravel. Once at camp, enjoy dinner and a well-earned night’s sleep.
Overnight: Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Moshi
3,068 m to approximately 1,640 m · 10 km · 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Enjoy breakfast at camp before beginning the final descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest. The trail can be wet and slippery, so take your time and continue using your trekking poles.
As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation grows thicker. After several days in the high-altitude environment, the return to the forest is a welcome change.
On reaching Mweka Gate, complete the park exit procedures and collect your certificate, according to the highest point you reached. Climbers who reach Uhuru Peak receive a summit certificate.
Meet your driver for the transfer back to Moshi, where you can take a hot shower, relax and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Is the The best 6 Days Successful Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route (2027–2029) right choice?
The six-day itinerary is a good option for travellers with limited time who are physically prepared for a demanding climb. It includes the main highlights of Machame, including the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and Uhuru Peak.
However, the shorter schedule means less time for acclimatisation, and the long fourth day can leave climbers tired before summit night. The seven-day Machame itinerary adds an overnight stay at Karanga Camp, allowing a more gradual approach to Barafu.
For anyone whose main priority is reaching the summit, the seven-day Machame Route is generally the better choice. If you must complete the climb in six days, arrive well rested, train beforehand and choose an experienced operator who puts safety ahead of summit ambitions.
