Your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate.

Upon arrival, your mountain guide will assist with park registration and the necessary preparations before starting the trek.

The first day takes you through the beautiful tropical rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail passes through dense vegetation, tall trees, and areas covered with moss and ferns.

You may encounter different bird species and, occasionally, monkeys moving through the forest.

The trail gradually ascends toward Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will prepare your tents and dinner.

After arriving at camp, you will have time to relax and enjoy your first evening on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Overnight: Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Starting Elevation: 2,835 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,750 meters
Hiking Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Shira Camp

After breakfast, you will leave Machame Camp and continue climbing toward Shira Camp.

The trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone, where the vegetation becomes shorter and the mountain views begin to open.

You will walk across rocky paths and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and distant landscapes.

As you gain altitude, you may begin to see the impressive summit of Kibo.

The trail continues toward the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Upon arrival at Shira Camp, your trekking team will prepare lunch or dinner according to your arrival time.

The afternoon provides an opportunity to rest and adjust to the higher altitude.

Overnight: Shira Camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Starting Elevation: 3,750 meters
Highest Point: Approximately 4,630 meters at Lava Tower
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,900 meters
Hiking Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Today is an important day for altitude acclimatization.

After breakfast, you will leave Shira Camp and begin trekking toward Lava Tower, a large volcanic rock formation located at approximately 4,630 meters.

The trail passes through rocky landscapes with limited vegetation as you enter the alpine desert zone.

Although the climb becomes more demanding because of the altitude, the scenery is beautiful.

You will stop near Lava Tower for lunch before descending toward Barranco Camp.

This section follows the important acclimatization principle of climbing high and sleeping lower.

As you descend, you will notice changes in the vegetation, including giant groundsels in suitable areas.

Barranco Camp is located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall, which you will climb the following morning.

Overnight: Barranco Camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Starting Elevation: Approximately 3,900 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,995 meters
Hiking Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you will begin one of the most exciting sections of the Machame Route: the Barranco Wall.

This steep rocky section requires careful climbing and the occasional use of your hands for balance. Although it looks intimidating from below, it is normally manageable with guidance from your mountain crew.

Once you reach the top, you will enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The trail then continues through a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

Today’s trek is relatively short, allowing more time for rest and acclimatization.

After arriving at camp, you will enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing.

Overnight: Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Starting Elevation: 3,995 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 4,673 meters
Hiking Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you will continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp, the final campsite before the summit attempt.

The trail passes through rocky alpine desert landscapes with very little vegetation.

As you climb higher, the air becomes thinner, and your guide will encourage you to maintain a slow and steady walking pace.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will have lunch and receive instructions about the summit climb.

Your mountain guide will explain the expected weather conditions, clothing requirements, and safety procedures for the final ascent.

You will have time to rest, prepare your equipment, and enjoy an early dinner.

The summit attempt normally begins around midnight, depending on weather conditions and your guide’s assessment.

Overnight: Barafu Camp before the summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Starting Elevation: 4,673 meters
Summit Elevation: 5,895 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 3,100 meters
Hiking Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–16 Hours
Habitat: Arctic Summit Zone and Moorland
Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro climbing adventure.

You will wake up around midnight and prepare for the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak.

After a light meal and warm drinks, you will begin climbing slowly through the darkness.

The trail is steep and passes over loose volcanic scree, making the climb physically demanding.

Your mountain guides will maintain a slow pace and monitor your condition throughout the ascent.

After several hours of climbing, you will reach Stella Point on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 meters.

From Stella Point, you will continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Reaching Uhuru Peak – 5,895 Meters

Reaching Uhuru Peak is the highlight of your seven-day Machame Route adventure.

Standing at 5,895 meters above sea level, you will have reached the highest point in Africa.

Weather and visibility permitting, you may enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding glaciers, crater landscapes, and distant plains.

After taking photographs and celebrating your achievement, you will begin descending toward Barafu Camp.

Following a short rest and meal, you will continue descending to Mweka Camp.

This is a long and demanding day, but reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement.

Overnight: Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi or Arusha

Starting Elevation: Approximately 3,100 meters
Ending Elevation: Approximately 1,640 meters
Hiking Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, you will begin your final descent through the beautiful rainforest toward Mweka Gate.

The trail passes through green forest landscapes, where you may see different bird species and other wildlife.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park exit procedures.

Eligible climbers who successfully reached the relevant summit points will receive their Kilimanjaro climbing certificates.

Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but weather conditions vary between seasons.

January to March: These months often provide relatively clear mornings, cooler temperatures, and good mountain views. February is particularly popular among climbers.

April to May: This is generally the main rainy season. Trails can become wet and slippery, making trekking more challenging.

June to October: This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are often drier, with good visibility, although summit temperatures can be extremely cold.

November to December: Short rains may occur, but climbing remains possible. Weather conditions can change quickly at higher elevations.

For official information about Mount Kilimanjaro and park regulations, visit the Tanzania National Parks Authority.

How Difficult Is the 7 Days Machame Route?

The Machame Route is considered a challenging Kilimanjaro trekking route because of its steep sections, high altitude, and demanding summit day.

Although technical mountaineering experience is not normally required, climbers should have good physical fitness and be prepared for several consecutive days of hiking.

The seven-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day compared with the six-day Machame Route, making it a popular choice for travelers who prefer a more gradual ascent.

However, altitude sickness remains a serious risk. Good fitness does not prevent altitude illness, and reaching the summit is never guaranteed.

Our mountain guides monitor climbers throughout the trek and make safety decisions based on individual conditions, weather, and mountain circumstances.

What to Pack for the 7 Days Machame Route

Proper trekking equipment is important for a comfortable Kilimanjaro climbing experience.

We recommend bringing:

  • Waterproof hiking boots.

  • Warm thermal clothing.

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers.

  • Insulated summit jacket.

  • Warm gloves and a hat.

  • Comfortable trekking trousers.

  • Hiking socks.

  • Headlamp with spare batteries.

  • Trekking poles.

  • Sleeping bag suitable for freezing temperatures.

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.

  • Daypack and waterproof bag covers.

  • Water bottles or hydration system.

  • Personal medication and toiletries.

Your climbing equipment should be suitable for both warm rainforest conditions and freezing summit temperatures.

Why Choose the 7 Days Machame Route?

The seven-day Machame Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Its main attraction is the variety of landscapes encountered during the climb. Within seven days, you will travel through tropical rainforest, open moorland, alpine desert, and the mountain’s summit zone.

The route also offers excellent views of Kibo Peak, the Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley, and the surrounding mountain landscapes.

Another advantage is its acclimatization profile. The route includes several opportunities to climb to higher elevations before descending to sleep at lower camps.
